About Me!
Hi my name is Riley Laird and I am a teacher at G.S Lakie Middle School.
For the 2013-2014 school year I am teaching grade 6 Math, Science, Literacy support, Film Studies and Leadership.
I am passionate about learning and I hope that my students will share in my passion. In addition to my BEd. I have a BA in Geography from the University of Lethbridge. I have taught grades 4- 8, and I started teaching here at G.S. Lakie last year in the beginning of term 3. I have also taught ESL overseas in a variety of different countries and I am currently working towards my fluency in Spanish.
I have lived and traveled all over the world. I spent 10 years living in Jakarta Indonesia and a year in Geneva Switzerland. I have been back and forth to South East Asia many times since living there as my family still lives in Thailand. All in all I have been to over 35 countries, and I hope to keep travelling. I’ve been living in Lethbridge for 7 years now and love it, I think it is a great city.
My Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that learning should be exciting and enjoyable to all. Every child should have the right to education and the inevitable lifelong discovery that comes with it. My hope is to instill the same passion for learning in my students as I have myself.
I also believe that it is important to teach children how to teach themselves rather than to be their primary source of information. I believe in teaching my students independence and confidence in their abilities. In that respect teaching is much like ancient proverb “give a man a fish he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish he eats for life.”
Each child is a unique individual whose learning needs are all different and they require a; safe, caring and stimulating atmosphere in which to grow and mature emotionally, intellectually, and socially.
I believe that education is more than just simply what is stated in the program of studies, it is about creating functional members of a global society with their own set of dreams and goals, good morals, ambitions, and caring personalities.
